Penzance Sea Cadets Sail by Carol Alway

On Monday 24 July, Happy Return left Penzance harbour, with John Van der Hoff, as skipper, and

James Walker, as mate accompanied by three MBLA members, five Sea Cadets (two girls and three boys) and accompanied by two Cadet instructors .

The youngsters really engaged and listened to John V - who's an excellent instructor – during the introduction and safety talk. One lad was especially keen, enquiring, and handy and we have him pencilled in as a future member!

Excitement increased as we put up canvas. Sailing with only the smaller mainsail, for simplicity of instruction and handling, the breeze was stiff enough to scud Happy Return at a speed to impress the youngsters, who commented on the silence, being used to motorboats, if any.

They really liked viewing St Michael's Mount from 'the other side' – of course you can't see this from shore.

But the crowning experience was Happy Return meeting up with a small pod of common dolphins,

some young ones, who obliged by swimming round, diving under and keeping pace with us, leaving for a bit – hunting – but then returning, and playing round the boat, going under and coming up, bow riding to Happy Return.

One girl was particularly entranced, and watched, eyes shining and mouth slightly open, as long as

she could.

All in all, a very successful trip for all of us, hopefully to be repeated, and no-one was sea-sick!

MBLA: Sailing Program - Mates Required.

The festive season is now over, boat maintenance is now in full swing and we are in the process of preparing a Sailing Program for the coming season.

This year we have a shortage of Mates. Is there is anyone out there who would like to assist the Skipper and crew as a Mate? No sailing qualification is required, just lots of enthusiasm and also the opportunity to learn Lugger skills and gain some experience and work with the Skipper to gain a deeper knowledge of sailing techniques.

If interested please contact Mark Mitchell ASAP to register your interest. You can also get involved with the Sailing Program meetings where we allocate Skippers and Mates to events.

Look forward to seeing you at the meetings.

November End-of-season Newsletter

As we find ourselves near the end of our sailing season, we are still hoping to end with a couple of bay sails, weather permitting.

We are still in Newlyn at the moment, and we’ve had a couple of unexpected costs as you may have seen from Marks latest update.

A total of £3000 has been spent in excess of our planned maintenance which was taken from our contingency fund. That’s the bad news, however the good news is that from the funds raised this year by the sale of art works and our 50/50 draw we have successfully raised the funds to pay for our new boat cover which will keep HR in better condition throughout the winter and in the long term reduce our maintenance outlay.

Over the coming year we will of course need to not only cover our normal running costs but also replace the contingency funds used, so your committee will be putting fund raising plans together over the winter season.

But before this there are still opportunities to support the association by entering the 50/50 draw, purchasing art works, and supporting our winter talks.

The first talk will be on 16th November at Penzance sailing club from Marine discovery talking about the wildlife of mounts bay and their work conserving it. Entry will but £3 1900hrs for 19.30 start, hope to see you there.

Look out for updates on sailing opportunities on WhatsApp and email in the near future.

All the best

Deck Refurbishment

On Monday 5 September we received a message from Bradley Cane at Sandy Cove Boatyard requesting that we bring the Happy Return (HR) to Newlyn on the weekend of 10th/11th of September so that they can undertake the planned work on the deck.

This has two implications:-

1. We will need to clear the decks of all spares and deck boxes prior to work commencing.

2. The sailing program will go on hold, probable for the remainder of this month.

With this in mind, it is intended that all deck furniture will be removed from HR this Thursday morning, 8 September, commencing at 0930 in the wet dock. If you are free and able to help, kindly let Mark know. Weather permitting, we should be all done by about lunchtime.

In so far as the resumption of the sailing program is concerned, We will let you all know as soon as we can see the end in sight.
